Way back in 2006 when we launched the first exterior LED signal light upgrade for Defender we encountered some issues on older vehicles. These earlier Defenders have a single green warning light within the dash to display when the indicators are functioning. When upgrading the exterior lights from bulb to LED this can cause problems due to the way the dash indicator light reacts when using LED lights. Symptoms can include the left side indicator coming on when indicating right and vice versa. Often the light is dimly lit (ghosting) and the issue will disappear if the original filament bulbs are replaced.
In order to “fix” this ghosting we developed a fix consisting of a small kit of parts. This “fix” is not expensive but does require the removal of the dash and some cutting and crimping using heat shrink terminals. We provide the parts and some basic instructions but some basic tools such as screwdriver, wire cutters, decent crimpers and a suitable heat source to heat shrink are required.
If you Defender has separate green warning lights in the instrument cluster with left and right arrows this fix is NOT suitable.
This will not fix “fast flashing” on Defender where the indicators flash at twice the normal speed when upgrading exterior signal lights to LED units. The fix for this would be upgraded the standard relay to an LED flasher relay. If the vehicle is used to tow we recommend and adjustable rate flasher.

If only one light is dim or not lit that may be indicative of a different problem, we recommend swapping the light with another to see if the problem persists. This will help confirm the light is working as expected and point towards a wiring or connection issue.
